Summary of Chapter

Part One:
The chapter is divided up in 5 main key points. The chapter states that modeling is a key factor to learning. Learning from others can be a huge help when striving in unknown information. It’s a key element in the social cognitive theory. This all relates to the model and the observer. The observer learns through the model and whatever the model does, it affects the observers opinion. Modeling, or learning by observing others, is a key element of social cognitive theory. In order to model, one has to pay attention, be able to retain information, be able to perform it, and have motivation and reinforcement. One has to direct attention, fine-tune already-learned behaviors, strengthen or weaken inhibitions, teach new behaviors, and arouse emotion.

Self-efficacy is the next thing. Basically stating that efficacy is what helps drive persistence and motivation to continue on. There are different sources of self-efficacy, like social persuasion. Teachers really boost student efficacy because they really believe they can reach out even to the most difficult students. Vicarious experiences is another source, meaning that someone else models accomplishments.

Self-regulated learning is the combination of knowledge, motivation to learn and volition that provides the skill and will to learn effectively. Self-regulated learning cycle is analyzing a task, setting goals and making plans and strategies to accomplish the task. Students benefit greatly from doing each of those things. Not just academically, but those steps can be applied to some life situations.

Cognitive behavior modification can be very helpful to everyone. It is the controlling of ones emotions in the social setting and in the person. Being able to distinguish what emotions drive relationships between people and being able to handle stress very well.

There can also be emotional self-regulation. Within this, there are five core social and emotional skills and competences:
self-awareness-accuratley assessing your feelings,
interests, values, strengths, while maintaining a well-
grounded sense of self-confidence

self-management- expressing emotions appropriately and
regulating your emotions to handle stress, control impulses,
and persevere in overcoming obstacles

social awareness- taking the perspective of and empathizing
with others

relationship skills- resisting inappropriate social

pressures

responsible decision-making- making decisions based on
consideration of ethical standards, safety concerns,
appropriate social norms, respect for others, and likely
consequences of various actions

Teaching towards self-efficacy and self-regulation learning is crucial for teachers. This helps connect them better to build better teacher-student relationships. Ways teachers can do this is by setting up big projects that span over time, and giving students choices to make. Letting them have some say in how the grading will work and let them know they control their own grades. This is a big step for students to take in the classroom. It guides them to understanding and shaping their own path.
